As parents, we want nothing more than to give our little ones an experience they’ll never forget on their special day. But it’s hard to think of new kids birthday party ideas year after year — especially if you’ve hosted some great ones in the past.

Don’t worry though, because at Planet Mino we specialise in epic adventures. We entertain kids day in day out and we’re here to help you brainstorm new birthday party ideas and make your little one’s next birthday the best one yet.

Top Tips for Children’s Birthday Parties

Not sure how to start planning a kids party? Try these top tips.

1) Run Wild with a Fun Birthday Party Theme

Kids love to embrace a good old theme. Whether it’s their favourite cartoon character or a concept like space travel, there are many different options you can choose from.

Picking a theme is a great way to make sure that your kid enjoys and remembers the day, but it can also help with the planning and organising. Once you’ve got a theme, it’s easier to design invitations, choose decorations and select party entertainment. A themed party can even help guests to think of birthday gifts that your little one will love.

Some fun party themes include:

  • Favourite animal (lion, bunny, monkey, giraffe — the list is endless)
  • Favourite colour (or use them all in a rainbow theme)
  • Favourite TV show or character (Bluey, Blippi, Peppa Pig, Pokémon and so on)
  • Favourite movie (Frozen, Encanto, Moana, Minions, Sing, etc)
  • Safari
  • Space
  • Trains
  • Dinosaurs
  • Unicorns
  • Pirates
  • Robots
  • Prince or princess
  • Superhero
  • Beach party
  • Pyjama party
  • Under the sea

These are just a few kid birthday theme ideas. There are many other options out there so don’t be afraid to get creative.

If you’re not sure what theme to pick, keep it simple and go for something that you know your child loves. If they’re obsessed with Bluey or love playing with dinosaurs, then let that be your guide.

2) Double Down on the Decorations

Now that you’ve got your theme sorted, you can start planning decorations. This can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be. If you’ve got a big budget, you can go all out. But, if you’re short on time or money, the most important thing to think about is colour.

Pick one or two balloon colours as the foundation of your decorations. For example, if you’re hosting a lion themed birthday party, use gold and yellow balloons. If you’re hosting a Blippi themed birthday, use blue and orange.

A cardboard cut-out is a great idea if the theme is a character or person or animal — and the kids will love taking pictures with it! If you can’t get your hands on a cardboard cut-out, some soft toys or even photos can also do the trick.

If you have the time and the budget, matching the rest of the party to the theme is also a great idea. From party supplies like plates, cups and cutlery to party food and party favours, keeping everything to the same colour scheme or theme can really pull it all together.

3) Stock Up on Plenty of Party Food

Kids and adults love party food! Make sure you have plenty of options for fussy eaters as well as options that suit everyone’s dietary needs. It’s good to have a balance of healthier options as well as tasty treats. It’s also worth checking if the guests have any allergies.

Kids can be picky at the best of times so having a variety of options is always a good idea. Some great party food options include:

  • Fairy bread
  • Cupcakes
  • Sausage rolls
  • Fruit
  • Zucchini slices
  • Jelly
  • Veggie sticks
  • Popcorn

It’s also a good idea to have one or two stand-out party food items to go with the overall theme. For example, we’ve had Pokémon parties with cupcakes dedicated to different Pokémon characters. We’ve also hosted a Bluey-themed party with a giant Bluey birthday cake. These themed party foods can be used as awesome centrepieces for the table while also giving the kids something to look forward to later on.

4) Make Sure There’s Plenty of Entertainment

The best kids birthday parties have plenty of entertainment. Whether it’s a fun game, a special guest or something that keeps them physically active, you need at least one kind of activity or entertainment option for the day.

Some great party entertainment options include:

  • Party games like pass the parcel, musical chairs or pin the tail on the donkey
  • Clown
  • Magician
  • Karaoke
  • Arts & crafts
  • Soft play
  • Adventure playground
  • Bouncy castle
  • Disco
  • Face painting
  • Special guest entertainer (Elsa, Superman, Moana etc)
